Why You Don't Want to Miss This Tour
Most visitors interested in Lincoln's assassination will see Ford's Theatre and stop there. This tour goes far beyond the well-known landmarks to explore the entire story, including several locations that are rarely visited even by dedicated Civil War travelers.
Among the sites we expect to visit or interpret during the tour are:
Ford's Theatre District & Booth's Escape Route
Walk in the footsteps of history as we trace the first moments of John Wilkes Booth's escape from Ford's Theatre. Follow the alleyways and streets that carried the assassin away from the scene of the crime and into the darkness of Washington, D.C., setting in motion the dramatic pursuit that forms the heart of this tour.
Surratt House Museum
The first stop made by Booth and David Herold after their escape from Washington and one of the most important locations connected to the conspiracy.
Dr. Samuel A. Mudd House Museum
The home where Booth received treatment for his broken leg and one of the most famous and controversial stops along the route.
Rich Hill Farm
One of the newest museums associated with the escape route and a site that few history enthusiasts ever have an opportunity to visit.
Dent's Meadow
A little-known location where Booth's journey took a critical turn as he prepared to cross the Potomac into Virginia.
Port Royal Museum of American History
Explore the Virginia town through which the fugitives passed as federal authorities closed in.
Garrett Farm Site
The dramatic final chapter of the story, where Booth's twelve-day flight ended in a burning tobacco barn.
More than a simple sightseeing trip, this tour connects these locations into a single, compelling narrative that follows the assassin's every move while examining the investigators, civilians, and soldiers who ultimately brought the pursuit to an end.
Meeting Point
We will be departing at 7:30am from the Branch Avenue Metro Station located at 4704 Old Soper Rd, Suitland-Silver Hill, MD, 20746. This metro station is at the easternmost location of the D.C.
