Pipe Creek Tour: George Meade’s Enduring Controversy!

Date: May 10, 2025

Join us for a tour of the Army of the Potomac’s proposed Pipe Creek line!

On June 28, 1863, Major General George Meade assumed command of the Union Army of the Potomac. His transfer of command orders included two directives: bring Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s army to battle and protect Baltimore & Washington.

The proposed Pipe Creek line offered General Meade the opportunity to fulfill the second portion of his orders. Using the steep banks, creek tributaries, and nearby roads, the line was perfectly suited for defense. Once contact with Lee’s army occurred and the battle of Gettysburg ensued, however, the Pipe Creek line was not occupied. Yet, controversy continues today regarding the extent that Pipe Creek influenced the movements of Meade and his corps commanders.

Our tour will examine various points along the Pipe Creek line and discuss Meade’s decisions as circumstances developed in late June 1863. Decide for yourself: was Pipe Creek Meade’s intended battle line or was it only a mere contingency?
